China to restrict exports of metals critical to chip production

CHINA has recently implemented restrictions on the export of two metals crucial for the production of semiconductors and other electronic devices, reports Bloomberg News.

This move is expected to increase costs for hardware manufacturers and further intensify geopolitical tensions surrounding the race to develop advanced computing technology.

Effective from August 1, China's Ministry of Commerce announced that gallium and germanium, along with their chemical compounds, will be subjected to export controls. The statement emphasised that these measures are necessary for national security and in the interest of China.

China holds a leading position in the global production of various critical raw materials, including gallium and germanium, both in terms of mining and refining.

These metals play a vital role in the manufacturing of products such as solar panels, lasers, night-vision goggles, and computer chips.

Exporters of gallium and germanium will now be required to obtain licences from the commerce ministry to continue or initiate shipments outside the country.

The companies must provide details of their overseas buyers and submit their applications, with the possibility of reviews being escalated to the State Council if necessary.

This latest measure adds to the ongoing global competition for control over technologies essential for industrial and military capabilities. It can be seen as a further escalation in the deteriorating relationship between China and strategic rivals such as the United States.
